The Indian automobile market showed annual growth in August 2026 even though many of the top-selling cars saw a drop compared to the previous month. Tata Punch, along with its all- version Tata Punch EV remained at the top spot with 21,320 units sold slightly ahead of Maruti Suzuki WagonR.
Tata Punch Stays King
The Tata Punch kept up its winning form by selling 21,320 units in August. Though there was a marginal increase from 21,313 units sold in July, what is more significant is that it has registered a 99 percent rise when compared to the 10,704 units in August 2025. The figure is inclusive of sales of both Punch with petrol engine and Punch EV.
The styling of Punch with SUV like attributes and compactness in size has helped it sell well in India.
WagonR And Swift Are Next
Maruti Suzuki's WagonR came in third place with sales of 20,180 units. Even though this was a drop of 14 percent compared to the previous month, it was still 39 percent higher than the same month last year. That year 14,552 units were sold.
It was followed by Swift in third position with 19,832 units, recording a 60 percent year-on-year increase.
Maruti Suzuki Keeps Its Reign Intact
Six models from Maruti Suzuki were on the top ten list, apart from the already mentioned WagonR and Swift models. These include the Fronx, Ertiga, Dzire, and Baleno.
The Fronx had sales of 18,730 units, the Ertiga had sales of 18,516 units, the Dzire had sales of 18,418 units, and Baleno completed Maruti's entry into the ninth position with sales of 15,746 units.
Remarkably, almost all these models experienced monthly decline but still showed significant yearly growth.
Tata And Hyundai Have Their Say Too
Tata Motors had two entries in the top 10 list. With 18,431 units, the Nexon grew by 32 percent in yearly terms and 5 percent in monthly terms as of July.
Hyundai had just one entry in the list. The Creta had 16,288 units but its yearly growth was rather low at 2 percent, while it experienced 10 percent in monthly declines. The Scorpio of Mahindra had 15,576 units, growing by 58 percent compared to August 2025.
So What Does The August Sales Data Tell Us?
The August sales figures indicate that despite the impressive growth in year-on-year figures, month-on-month growth has not been achieved. Nine out of the top 10 selling cars had lower sales compared to July, except for the Tata Nexon.
However, the passenger vehicle market experienced a great month, with SIAM indicating record August sales for passenger vehicles, which were mostly fueled by utility vehicles.
Our Takeaway
That the Tata Punch continues to hold its place atop the August sales charts is the most important insight from this report. Another is the almost doubling of its sales in comparison with the previous year.
Meanwhile, the fact that there are six Maruti models on the list reveals the strength of the company's line-up when it comes to hatchback, SUV, sedan and MPV cars. The upcoming festive season makes the battle for supremacy more intense still.
