Both the Y43 micro SUV and a refreshed version of the Fronx model will soon join the ranks of Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUVs range. The models are set to introduce new technologies and engines for the carmaker to enter the SUV segment.
Y43 To Compete With Tata Punch
The Y43 is likely to be positioned below the Fronx and will act as the successor to the defunct Ignis. It will be built as a compact, upright SUV designed for first-timers, which will likely rival the likes of Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
This SUV will come with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine, which comes with mild-hybrid tech. CNG is also likely to be considered, while there have been rumors that Maruti may one day explore other powertrains.
Boost In Technology For The Fronx Facelift
More than just cosmetics could come with the Fronx facelift. According to spy photographs, the test vehicles have been spotted equipped with LiDAR and radar calibration equipment, meaning that Level 2 ADAS could come with high-end variants.
The facelifted crossover could also get a new look at its front and rear end, as well as a bigger 10.25-inch touchscreen, ventilation of front seats, and electric sunroof.
But Hybrid Engine Might Prove To Be More Important
It is likely that Fronx will continue using its 1.2 litres normally-aspirated petrol and 1.0 litres turbocharged petrol engines in the beginning. But Maruti is also said to be developing their own strong hybrid powertrain in the Fronx, which is also expected to come up later on.
The hybrid engine is said to have the Z-series engine design of the company.
Our Take
While the Y43 and the Fronx facelift signify two entirely different strategies adopted by Maruti in its compact SUV line-up, the former is poised to revive the brand in the micro-SUV category with a successor to the current Punch, whereas the latter can be a step-up model from the crossover thanks to advanced technology and hybrids.
Nevertheless, there is still a lot that is not yet confirmed by Maruti Suzuki in terms of specifications, variants and prices.
